Top tips from two of the UK's best B&Bs

We caught up with Riverside Escape and Avondale Guest House, who've just been named as two of the top 25 B&Bs in TripAdvisor's 2019 Travellers’ Choice Awards.

We’re delighted to announce that two of our awesome Inn Style customers have been named amongst TripAdvisor’s Top 25 B&Bs in the UK! Congratulations to Riverside Escape and Avondale Guest House, both based in Keswick.

This is a huge achievement, given that there are more than 20,000 B&Bs in the UK. We caught up with both businesses to hear what they had to say.

Congratulations guys! How does it feel to know that you’re one of the UK’s best B&Bs?

Tony and Pearl (Avondale Guest House): We were delighted to find out we had been awarded this. We found out whilst travelling in India earlier this year.

Jana and Martin (Riverside Escape): Fantastic! It’s quite unbelievable to think that we ended up 12th in the UK.  We didn’t expect the award at all. It truly came as a surprise, especially considering that we’re just a small B&B with three rooms. 

Had you received any similar awards before? What do you think makes this one so special?

Tony and Pearl: We’ve received a number of awards in the last year including the TripAdvisor Hall of Fame and the Visit England ROSE awards. This one was particularly special insofar as its reach – being a UK-wide award we were pitched against so many other fantastic B&B’s and guest houses.

Jana and Martin: We’ve never received anything like this before. We’ve only been going for four years. A year after we opened we were really badly flooded during Storm Desmond. It’s quite special that, despite this setback, we still had loyal guests staying with us and leaving positive reviews, even months after whilst we were carrying out reparations.

How do you ensure that you stand out from the crowd?

Tony and Pearl: We’ve stayed in many B&Bs and guest houses over the years, and have often commented on what ‘we would do’ if we owned one ourselves. Getting the basics like hospitality and cleanliness right is the foundation of any business in our mind. We then constantly look at things we can do to enhance everyone’s visit – providing fresh milk, home baked cakes and bottled water in the rooms each day seems to get noticed. Many of our guests comment on their experience and how welcome they felt. It’s easy for us to do as they are all such lovely people.

Jana and Martin: We offer very good value for money. There are also unique touches throughout the house such as a private sauna in one of the bedrooms and a jacuzzi. We built some of the furniture ourselves as well, so you won’t find the same style in any other B&B. We have free private parking for our guests too, which is quite rare here in Keswick and very much appreciated by our customers.

What are your top tips for ensuring a great guest experience?

Tony and Pearl: Always be yourself: you cannot maintain a disguise, as you will be tested at times. Provide a clean and friendly environment, and do all you can to predict what your guests are looking for. Always try and do that little bit extra.

Jana and Martin: Welcome guests with a smile – as our byline says “warmth and friendliness await you.” Spacious rooms, comfortable beds and clean bathrooms are a must. We try and offer the same standard as we would like to receive when staying somewhere else.
